Novosibirsk is the largest city in Siberia, center of Siberian Federal District, third most populated area in Russia. Despite the fact that Novosibirsk is a relatively young city, it has quickly grown thanks to the railroad construction. The Sibirsk Branch of the Academy of Sciences of USSD was established in the 1950s. As a result, today Novosibirsk is one of the largest science and educational center of Russia. Local Science Campus is well known abroad.
Novosibirsk is the home city of the great wrestler Alexander Karelin. The town has a very famous biathlon school, represented by the famous biathletes Alexander Tikhonov, Sergey Buligin, Victor Mamatov, Sergey Tarasov. Novosibirsk is also the home city of the following sports stars: boxer Denis Inkin, fencer Stanislav Pozdnyakov, athletes Victor Markin and Andrey Perlov, gymnast Evgeniy Podgorniy. Local hockey club "Sibir" participates in the Kontinental Hockey League.
